Storage Types

Storage type is Physical area where products are stored in a warehouse. This is a master data.

New Entry to create storage type consist of below areas:

  • General Area
  • Putaway control area: how are we going to store products
  • stock removal area
  • Goods movement control
  • Replenishment
Storage type role:

Putaway Rules: The putaway rule specifies the logic that the system will use to find destination bins during putaway.
  • Addition to Existing stock/Empty Bin - The system will look for space in existing bin, if found it will keep the product there otherwise will go to empty bin. Effectively using bin space. it can contain mixed storage.
  • Empty Bin-  always going for empty bin
  • General Storage- we use shop floor, we bring product and store accordingly
  • Consolidation Group- Activity area - will discuss later

Delete Stock Identification- This makes the system delete the stock identification before putaway from the respective stock has been completed. If stor. control/put.Completion indicator is set then this is also required to be set.

Confirmation of Stock Removal Required- Means that if there is a stock removal from this storage type, the warehouse task must be confirmed.

Staging Areas: Each Staging area that will be used is defined as a Storage Type. These Storage Types have storage type role = I  and D . The difference between the two is there will be additional steps performed in these staging areas (like Loading) it is a suggested that these be defined as work centres. The External Step for these Storage Type is configured as STAG.

SAP SCM – IMG  > Extended Warehouse Management>Master Data >Staging Area >Define Staging Area

Staging areas are storage sections that fall within a storage type with storage role ‘D’. Staging areas are used to provide interim storage for goods after unloading or before loading. During loading, the sequence of the bins in the staging area can be used as a loading sequence. In the staging area definition, you select whether the staging area is for use in Goods Issue or Goods Receipt process. You also define the loading Rule.

You can group multiple staging area into staging area groups. The Staging area groups corresponding to storage type with storage type role as I or D while staging area corresponds to storage section

We will create 4 storage type for our warehouse HSWM
RK01, RK02 that are rack storages
GR01- Goods receiving staging area group with storage type role D
GI01- Goods Issuing staging area group with storage type role D
